Ruth Roman was born on June 22, 1939 at Lynn Massachusetts. The actress is the youngest child of Lithuanian Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold & Abraham Roman. The young woman was just a child when her father, who was employed as a carnival barker died. The mother of the family had to perform tasks such as waitressing and cleaning. Ruth was born in the poorest neighborhood in Boston Massachusetts where she attended high school. She left school after two years, to go into acting. The path she chose to take turned out to be strewn with obstacles and In New York, she obtained an opportunity to pose for stills for a crime magazine however, theatrical opportunities eluded her. Then, after a stint as a club hat girl and a club hat girl, she made the decision to go home and quit her job. She was an usherette in the mornings and performed at the New England Repertory Company by the evening. This was her first ever permanent acting job. Drama studies led her to graduate in the Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
